Science, Technology, Research and Innovation


Science, Technology, Research and Innovation has an internal and external focus to enhance our capabilities in scientific services as well as ICT and Data Analytics. To do by:

  • Continuing to develop our Expert Evaluative Opinion (EEO) approach in forensic casework and develop robust frameworks and processes for research and innovation.
  • Maintaining our participation in all relevant ENFSI and AFSP working groups and host the European Academy of Forensic Science (EAFS) Conference in Dublin.
  • Strengthening our external partnerships to grow capabilities and leverage emerging technologies.
  • Continuing to develop our ICT systems and analytics tools in a robust and safe manner.

FSI partnerships


The FSI participates in the scientific working groups of The European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) and The Association of Forensic Science Providers (AFSP) along with collaborating with other forensic science providers. This allows the FSI to have a scientific influence at both the domestic and International level.

EAFS 2025


In 2025 the FSI will host the European Academy of Forensic Science (EAFS) Conference in Dublin. This is a key milestone for FSI in further developing our international scientific reputation and strengthening our external partnerships.

Technology


To improve our ability to deliver on its mission of, Science Supporting Justice. The FSI has recently invested in new instrumentation which provides provide increased security, connectivity, flexibility and interoperability between instruments and work stations.

Research


Internally, FSI has created a position of a Principal Research Scientist and establishing an Internship programme. This new position will augment FSI’s current research capability. FSI also plans to further support our internal research with developments in the areas of robotics, digitisation, automation systems, along with exploring data analytics tools and AI.

Additional Services


FSI also collaborates with our partners in the delivery of shared service outcomes, including the provision of expert witnesses for court, an out of hour’s service and scene of crime training.

The work that the FSI performs in reporting emerging drug trends helps to inform the National Drug strategy and support the Health led response regarding the possession of drugs for personal use.
